THE HAUNTING OF THE MARI LWYD

This Concept draws on a Welsh folk tradition ( The Mari Lwyd ) in which a neglected horse is isolated from the stables to make way for the Virgin Mary during the Nativity. Through visceral reds and traditional Welsh lace, I evoke the violence, sacrifice, and injustice embedded in this act of exclusion. Folkloric elements—such as braiding, hand-developed symbols, and the recurring use of white weave—run throughout the work, creating a charged tension between purity and cruelty. Ultimately, the piece challenges religious ideals and religious innocence.
