THE BLEEDING HEART OF THE STEYNING MONSTER

Within this performance , I set out to conjure a conceptual, folklore-inspired monster rooted in my hometown of Steyning. Drawing on centuries-old local myths surrounding the Devil—stories of retreat and exile following Christian reform, culminating in the landscape now known as Devil’s Dyke—I reimagined this legacy through the creation of a vampirical creature driven by lust and violence. This figure reflects my own experience of growing up within the isolation of a small town. The film documents the creature’s awakening, accompanied by a descriptive poem I authored, blurring the boundaries between myth, memory, and embodied performance.
' ITS WHITE SKIN PIERCED BY THE MOONLIGHT.
THE MOONLIGHT HAS FUELD ITS SOUL ONCE MORE.
ONE LAST TIME .
TO REEK ITS RESTLESS LUST ON THE TOWN IT ONCE CALLED HOME.

SO ITS HEART MUST BLEED TO LIVE.

ITS WHITE FURY RUNS RED.
ITS ANGER.
ITS RAGE.
ITS YEARNING.
ITS PASSION.
ITS LONGING.

ITS DESIRE TO FEAST ON THE SOULS OF THIS RURAL TOWN.
THE TOWN THAT BANISHED ITS SOUL.
STRIPPED OF ALL HUMANITY FORCED TO BE THIS.
MONSTER.
MONSTER OF RAVAGE.MONSTER OF LUST.MONSTER OF PURE COLD PASSION.

LET THE MONSTERS BLEEDING HEART REIN.'
